The "Roundabout" Infrastructure & News
Navigating the Week
The Bend Marathon takes over Northwest Bend this Sunday (7 AM – 2 PM). If you’re heading to the Westside for a morning coffee or a trailhead, expect significant detours around the Old Mill, Galveston, and NW Crossing. Your best bet for crossing town is to use Reed Market or Newport Ave; avoid the Mt. Washington roundabouts entirely until after 10 AM.
Watch for Overnight Paving Downtown (April 8–9) Crews will be out on NW Greenwood near the Courthouse. If you’re heading home from a late-night shift or a late dinner, stick to Franklin or Newport to dodge the lane shifts.
The "North-End Hustle" remains in full swing The Butler Market and Purcell Blvd projects are still active. If you’re heading toward the hospital or Costco, give yourself an extra 10 minutes—these detours have officially become a local rite of passage.
A few "Quick Hits" for the week Keep an eye out for minor paving on NW Brooks St (April 8) and Empire Ave (April 9). It might clip your bike lane or a few parking spots, but it shouldn’t ruin your commute.

“Tail & Trail” Outdoor Conditions
The Agility Spot
If your dog needs more than just a game of fetch, head to Alpenglow Park (61049 SE 15th St). Beyond the 3.9 acres of fenced space, there’s a full agility course that’s perfect for burning off that "spring fever" energy.
The Insider Tip: The small dog area here is one of the best-maintained in the city—ideal if your pup is under 25 lbs and finds the Big Sky crowds a bit overwhelming.

"Community Pulse" Volunteer & Giving
Lend a Helping Hand
Mentor a child with Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth (COPY). This Saturday, April 11, COPY is hosting a spring training session for new mentors. They specialize in connecting volunteers with children who have an incarcerated parent—providing a stable, positive influence through simple activities like hiking, visiting the library, or grabbing a bite to eat. It’s a small time commitment that makes a massive difference in a local kid’s life.
"Every Child" Central Oregon. As we move into spring, the needs of foster families are shifting. Every Child is currently looking for "freshly laundered" spring clothing (newborn to XL) and high-quality baby gear like strollers and high chairs.
Note: They are especially in need of unopened sleeves of diapers and new hygiene supplies (shampoo, toothbrushes). You can drop these off at their local hubs to help speak dignity into the lives of children in care.
“The Pace” Runners/Athletes
11 Years of Miles
Happy 11th Anniversary to the Bend Marathon. This isn't just a race; it’s a Westside highlight reel—from the neighborhood charm of Compass Park to the silence of the Haul Road Trail.
To Our Runners - Don't burn your matches in the first 10 miles. The "Ponderosa canopy" is beautiful, but the real work begins after mile 15 as you climb toward the National Forest. Save your legs for that incline; the payoff is a gravity-assisted straight shot back into the Old Mill.
Dress for a 34°F sunrise. The high desert starts cold but will hit a breezy 55°F by the finish. Wear "throwaway" layers for the 7:00 AM start so you can shed them once you hit the exposed sections of the Parkway.
The energy is at the finish line. Head to the Old Mill around 11:00 AM for the afterparty. There will be live music, local food vendors, and plenty of celebration at the finish line to cap off the morning.
“Peak & Creek” Local Outdoors
The Spring Transition
Mt. Bachelor is in a classic "Spring Cycle." Expect beautiful sun-soaked laps, but keep an eye on the clock—Tuesday brings a shift with highs in the upper 40s and moderate to strong winds.
The Surface Report: Morning runs will feel like "frozen corduroy" before softening into perfect spring corn by midday. However, coverage is getting thin across the mountain. Stay in control and stick to the open runs; there are plenty of marked (and unmarked) obstacles poking through the snowpack right now.
If you’re heading up this week:
The Shuttle: The CET Park & Ride is still the smartest move to avoid the parking lot shuffle.
The Views: Take advantage of the Summit chair while the skies are clear; top-to-bottom riding is still in play for now.
Uphill Access: If you’re skinning up for a workout, remember that the free Uphill Pass and armband are strictly required.
The River Report: The Deschutes is currently flowing at a healthy 711 CFS, meaning the river looks full, vibrant, and ready for the season.
If you’re heading out this week:
For the Paddlers: At 700+ CFS, the current is steady but manageable. However, the water temperature is still hovering around 42°F. If you’re heading out near the Old Mill, dress for the "plunge," not the air temp.
For the Anglers: We are currently in the 75th percentile for flow, which is great for water quality but means you'll need a bit more weight to get your flies down to the fish in the deeper pools.
For the Walkers: The river is "up," making the Deschutes River Trail particularly scenic this week as the water brushes against the spring greenery.

That’s it for this week.
That’s the pulse for April 6–12. We’ll be back in your inbox next week with fresh updates on the Roundabout and the best of the Blueprints.
Take care of yourself and each other,
